August 3rd, 2013. Quite possibly the most memorable day we at Sonic Paradox ever had. This was the day that the annual Sonic fan convention, Summer of Sonic, was to be held. We had been planning for this moment for months. Since the holiday season, actually! Yes, we had planned on giving you guys Volume 8 since the time you guys had your Christmas trees up just late last year. I suppose some background information on the months leading up to this day is in order. One problem we had with Volume 8: time. We also had to deal with not having motivation and imagination. Coming up with ideas for shorts were something we just couldn't figure out. These three obstacles were tied together and were the brunt of why it was taking so long to work on this and why we had eventually decided the time had come to move on. Were we proud of this? Of course not. We'd turn to side projects to bide us time while we figured out just what to do with this thing. Hence Seaside Denied and the Wax-exclusive Shorts 7 for example. But something had to be done. We also realized that we should start on our yearly Summer of Sonic animation early. That way we're prepared for when the time comes to get our butts in gear and get something cooked up for you guys. So on Christmas Eve 2012 the idea of having Volume 8 be our Summer of Sonic animation was proposed and to enforce a deadline to get these shorts in. It wouldn't be too far in the future but not too close. That way it would address all three problems we were having. In other words we decided enough was enough. It was time to get this thing put out. I should note that at this point Volume 8 was 50% done. We got the other 50% done in just 7 and a half months. Did we get those problems sorted out? Of course! ![]() BoozermaN, Lilmario and Time8th present Metropolis Mayhem at Summer of Sonic In any case there was an overall majority in the ranks of SP and that was what we went with. Volume 8 would be our SoS goal for 2013. The deadline for getting shorts in would be in April then later moved to July as we found out we had more time to get this done than we thought. But we didn't think about making it a surprise animation until January 4th. We knew the public had no clue what was going on with the volume's progress. As far as they knew we weren't even close. So suddenly announcing that it was out would be perfect. Once again a majority came to this conclusion and that is what we went with. And then came the biggest rush of productivity I've ever seen from Sonic Paradox. So much got completed in the first two months of the year. I was from then on convinced that, when we manage to get our SP work schedule to co-exist with our personal lives and real life jobs in harmony and put our brains and hearts to it we really can accomplish anything and fast. We were on a roll. But there was still some questions. With Volume 8 having already been far in production what about those who already did shorts and want to animate as well? Could we see if they'd do something for Summer of Sonic too? And who said we couldn't show a second animation? So on January 28th there was an idea proposed about having a sequel to Seaside Denied but doing the musical with the second level in the game: Grand Metropolis. There was discussion and again there was approval. Metropolis Mayhem was born. And thus our game plan for Summer of Sonic was in place. ![]() An alternative preview image of Metropolis Mayhem I didn't use for the SP announcement article but in a tweet over on Twitter In March the first conversation with the Summer of Sonic staff began as this was the point where we figured it was time to inform them of what we had in store. This is when both sides first spoke of their intentions for the other this year and when we told them of what we had in the works they loved it! In June the talks began again but this time it was in full blown Summer of Sonic mode. It was the time where both sides were gearing up for SoS in their own fashion. The communcation lines were strong and used very frequently! In early July the idea was proposed in having people present our content there. BoozermaN was all for it. Time8th volunteered soon after, then a day later Lilmario did the same. The staff had no problem having three of us on stage and they got presenter status. Everything was in place. We had Metropolis Mayhem and Volume 8 done and sent to the Summer of Sonic staff just a few days apart from each other and around 9-10 days before the convention was to unfold. Then the waiting game began and that was killing us, no doubt about it! The magic, we knew, would be great. What we didn't expect is that even our highest expectations were not high enough for the day that was. I can't speak for everyone that day but I can give my own perspective on how things happened. My day began on 7:30pm Eastern/12:30am UK time on August 2nd. I slept late that day on purpose to ensure I could last the coming 24 hours. You see it wasn't just the fact I wanted to catch Summer of Sonic, I needed to. I had my official SoS commentary to do for the live feed and various other tasks that were supposed to be done later that day. The first thing that happened was getting a clean mp3 of Metropolis Mayhem to give out to stream viewers. So that was done. The rest of my evening was really just relaxing and playing Sonic music until I joined the Skype call to a Chaotix/Sonic 1 iOS stream that some of the guys at Sonic Retro were holding during the early morning hours. I'd juggle between that and a SP call for the rest of the night. Then, at 3:00am Eastern/8am UK time it was time to get ready for my Summer of Sonic commentary. While I continued to play Sonic music (A New Day from Sonic Rush was the track I played the most, it was so fitting for that pre-Summer of Sonic hype) I got ready to go. ![]() The Summer of Sonic live feed gets a special visit by the Sonic Paradox logo Coincidentally, an hour or so earlier there was a brief Skype conversation with the SP guys where we contemplated whether YouTube would do maintenance during SoS. I thought, "no that wouldn't happen". Fast forward to just a few minutes before SoS' doors were to open and we were to go live. It did just that. As I started my Audacity recording a couple of minutes prior there's an exclusive look in there as I rushed to migrate to the Sonic Paradox live stream as the YouTube stream feed I was to commentate in was now disabled due to the maintenance. It was a setback but it certainly didn't damper the mood! Everything was up and running within a couple of minutes. But boy were those minutes frantic ones! So we've kicked into high gear. The doors open, the opening remarks have been made and I grinned at the end of the remarks when the crowd reacted to hearing that we would be on stage momentarily. That would not be the last time. Booze's intro is shown. We all had not seen any of it. It was a secret even to us as to what would unfold. And we weren't let down at all. I should note that that was just the beginning! A couple of SP cameos appeared on phones as the SP logo showed and a notification of BoozermaN's arrival at the venue had been displayed. We were laughing at that. It was not expected at all. Me? My grin was even larger. And then we were in the spotlight as Metropolis Mayhem played and, despite there being some audio syncing problems that were quickly resolved, the reactions were relatively positive. And the crowd's reactions, when we saw later footage were even more positive. It was a hit. Despite the song being complicated to work with it seems the overall reaction has been great. Then I surprised the viewers with a link to download a clean version of Metropolis Mayhem with no sound effects for free. The reactions I got were wonderful. People were so grateful which is something I don't normally see this day and age. My heart warmed up and I felt good. But, really, you should thank Recorderdude for constructing the mp3 to be the clean version it was and and to Dr. Mack Foxx for polishing and labeling it. They're the real heroes here, no pun intended! ![]() A short bit later a phone shows up again but with an interesting declaration So Frobman's animation, Sonic Unleashed in Brief, was unfortunately not seen in the live feed but the crowd at SoS certainly did. SP didn't really get a look until after SoS when the video went live within the hour after the doors closed. We all loved it. Frobman is a great ally and friend to us at SP for a good reason. He has no problem with us, he's very talented with his content, and he's a wonderful guy when you get to know him! We're not rivals, despite the fact that both he and SP make stuff for SoS. We never will be. We like each other too much. But we loved Unleashed In Brief and are looking very much forward to his next project! As the day went on and my commentary unfolded (Smash Bros 4 confirmations, hats, and bags all over the place) I was anxious and impatient. The moment Volume 8 was to be shown was rapidly approaching and I just wanted it to get here. And then it got here. When I heard they were about to go up on stage I felt my heart jump and start beating quickly. It was time. I couldn't contain my excitement any longer. And my god the crowd reaction to hearing Volume 8 was ready...the loudest I had ever heard at a Summer of Sonic convention. And I've seen a lot of videos from past years of the convention. The grin I had was just everywhere. It was the biggest smile on my face I had in a loooooong time. And what's amazing is that it wasn't the biggest I had that entire day yet! So Volume 8 was shown. I found out that the crowd gasped at the Sega Shorts announcement as I was being relayed occasonial messages from Foreversonic and Jamie Egge Mann, bless their busy hearts that day, on the happenings with the crowd and schedule. I saw images of folks watching Shorts 8. The reactions in the chat were golden. I was grinning the whole way through. And I later grinned again when I saw the crowd reactions to Volume 8. It just seemed this day couldn't get any better. ![]() Attendees watch the debut of Sonic Shorts Volume 8 at Summer of Sonic 2013 But it did. I got jokingly called out in the live feed just before the raffle prize drawing was to occur and it started up a gag in the live feed that not only continued until the end of the convention but turned me into an internet meme that helped somehow gave me 30-40 followers that day and put me over the 1,000 Twitter follower mark. I was so shocked at this. And I still am! And yet I was grinning even more. So it's time to watch Jun Senoue to round out the convention this year. The folks that sung with him were amazing! I still love how they did. What a show! Then more singing happened. This was singing that none of us expected to hear at SP. As Jun broke into Seaside Hill the crowd suddenly broke into a song of their own: Seaside Denied! I will be the first to tell you that we never planned this. We never saw this coming. This was all the crowd's actions. And boy did we all grin. I'm amazed my jaws didn't hurt from grinning so much! But then Summer of Sonic ended. Seeing people in the stream saying "I don't want to leave" really summed up just what had happened and how much people didn't want this day to end. Even a thunderstorm that I got hit by within an hour after SoS concluded didn't ruin my good mood despite the fact that I was, and still am, utterly sick of them. I played Frobman's animation for the crowd still watching, played Volume 8 for the audience watching as they all wanted me to, did my Q&A after so many questions from the viewers and on my Ask.fm page, later reaired both animations as an encore presentation for those who missed them, and then I was finally able to relax. I was a tired mess and by the time the evening rolled around my excitement had finally died down. I'll never forget when I stopped streaming and recording. I just stared out into space in awe over what I had just experienced. And I smiled. The best day of my life. And I wasn't even there! What a day but I was ready for bed and so were the rest of us. I spent the following week recovering emotionally and physically along with doing any bonus assistance such as live feed screenshots and looking for crowd reactions to our content from those that attended SoS. And all for a good cause. You better believe I didn't regret any of it. ![]() The Summer of Sonic Twitter feed timeline blows up with tweets relating to the crowd singing Seaside Denied. They sum things up well. Even mine? Metropolis Mayhem and Volume 8 went live, the same way they were sent to the Summer of Sonic staff, mere days between each other. And the magic was still there. What a day. What a month, even! So closing remarks. What can I say? Me and Wax did all we could to sort out what needed to be sorted out. Everyone who worked on Metropolis Mayhem and Volume 8 did amazing and I'm proud of them. I still to this day believe that they deserve much more credit than I do. All I did was mere typing. They actually worked. And worked. Even through the wee hours of the morning sometimes. And that I admire. People who say we don't love what we do, appreciate what we have, and respect anyone are lying. Big time. But there's one thing people don't quite see. We love each other too. We're a family. A giant dysfunctional, goofy, family. Yet we're still mature about it all. And we're proud of it. We love Summer of Sonic. Not just because of the reactions we get to our content being something we can't experience anywhere else but because of the magic. There's no place like it. Seeing friends face to face for the first time, those goofy moments (Wes Wesley Vs. Robotnik anyone?) on stage and in between events, and just being with a great group of people. It's wonderful. We never take it for granted and we never will. We're all aware of the work that goes into something like this. But another reason? We can relate. We know the feeling of stress, of losing sleep to work, of all the time and effort spent just to help entertain a bunch of fans who happen to like the same thing we do for free: a blue hedgehog. I'll never forget that day. I wasn't even there and even I felt like I was in the moment. All of Sonic Paradox was in the moment. Still the appreciation was definitely there. Not just for the convention as a whole but for our fans who watch our work no matter how long it takes to finish it and have been loyal to us all these years. We wouldn't be where we are without them. We all know what we've done for you guys. When the crowd sung Seaside Denied I'll never forget Recorderdude, who came up with the concept of Seaside Denied and Metropolis Mayhem, wrote their lyrics, sang as Sonic in both, and directed both projects, being told in the SP Skype group "this is what you created". That summarizes, really, how we feel for every Summer of Sonic. Look at what we did for the crowd. The fans. We contributed. We created something the public loves. We were there after all. It was all 8 months in the making. And you know what? I think I speak for everyone when I say we would do it again. In a heartbeat. ![]() A new day brings new animating. Thanks for putting up with my stupidity and accidental spamming on there! - T-Bird and Rory for the great pre-SoS discussions we had! I hope I answered them the best I could! - Foreversonic for having me on his Post-SoS/Sonic Boom Random Hour podcast and keeping me up to date on things - The Summer of Sonic staff for saving the SP crew some goodie bags as gifts of appreciation, for having us on stage, and for letting us present our content there every year! - Sega for creating such a beloved franchise that has given me childhood memories and that I've loved to this day. - All of our fans. You all are awesome! Every single one of you! - Anyone else I haven't thanked but should've. My memory's awful. Edited by SSF1991, Tuesday Sep 10 2013, 04:18 PM.

With my 100th post, I would like to praise the team for all their hard work on all their animations over the years, making Newgrounds one of my more frequent stomping grounds back in the day. You all worked wonders with Metropolis Mayhem, SS8 and making sure it was smoothly and in good time. I would also like to wish you all luck on future projects, and hope that you can continue to enjoy their work as much as those who watch it. Thanks for all the laughs, SP. |

We all had a great time where ever we were. I'm just worried people are going to think I'm Lilmario in the picture, based on the order of names in relation to the picture.

They said that they won't bring Sonic Shorts 9 BEFORE this discussion, the success of Sonic Shorts 8 and the new animators and writers can of course be a good help and they might create Sonic Shorts 9, but the final decision is of the team, let us just hope for the best. |
