Did someone cough my name? Anyway as you all can probably tell my animations rely on tweened gradient objects all put together to create a more realistic look in terms of lighting. I use the pencil/shape tool to get the basic shape then tweak the shape into whatever it is I'm trying to make. Then once all 30+ objects are placed together on separate layers it ends up with a character and I can then animate every aspect of it individually. This technique is very time consuming but it suits me down to the ground and in terms of tweening it gives out a good result. |

I can see the potential benefits of using that many layers. Like the way you did Sonic's spikes in That Way, it was awesome. They flowed perfectly. Must have taken forever to get the correct overlapping action in every spike and other features, lawl. But yeah it suits you great, very recognisable too ![]() I envision your style like plasticine. Lots of bits and pieces making a character, heh. Very neat

I use the pencil tool, 0.5, draw my characters in multiple layers, I love my characters to look smooth. I try not to use tweening but I only use it to repeat a set of redrawn frames to loop or to create movement. I would really like to try draw more FBF if I didn't have a mouse, but it would be more time consuming. All my syncing is FBF but in an anime style (tweening mouth movement is just ugly, sorry). Personally I wanna animate more like Kaizoku. I don't have anything against tweening I mean, look at Boozerman's, Wax's, and Wonchop's style... freaking awesome. I guess I just wanna rely on my skills and not the program... (now that I realize it, I didn't word that correctly) |

i think i might be the most simplistic animator here, after animating the storyboard i just keep on working with the stoyrboard by filling in missing gaps with frame by frame goodness but in really skecthy look with either pencil tool or brush tool, after all that i just draw over everything with the line tool (my preferred tool :)) and try to struggle to make the backround look good, as for the outcome its mostly done on the least layers i can possibly squeeze the animation in and sometimes i use tween (which is rare) for eye movements and sometimes a arm thats barely mooving (so you can see why i would tween that instead of redrawing it). Kaizoku must be my biggest inspiration, my frame by frame skills arent even close to his but its getting somehwere |

@ RGX: ‘skills and not the program’- I know what you mean, it’s hella difficult to word. I mean, I was going to suggest revising it as ‘fluent skills with the raw medium as opposed to skills with the program’s capabilities with easing and tweening’, but that’s not true as there’s obviously a good sense of judgement on the part of the animator who does the tweening to know how the hell to do it... which is still a good understanding of the medium. Eh.. it’s so f-ing confusing to put it in correct words. xD# I have a similar principle with characters looking smooth although I tend to go shaky in my work. <_< But I try to get the lines as smooth as possible hence why I stopped using the ‘Ink’ function of the pencil tool.. which I use for doing layered lines and artsy fartsy stuff. Instead I use Ink to draw the sketch in a symbol, Smooth as the outliner while zoomed out a bit, and then break the symbol apart and voila, a frame. I try and plan the key on paper and scan it if possible. I also agree with your principle on not tweening the mouth. Can look hideous, especially when moving from the front of the mouth to the side- looks rather unnatural. Anime styled mouth looks good for the smooth, shaded artwork. @ Iceman: That’s a big plus for any animator- just work over the animatic. It’s good that way because at least you’re working to the same timing and stuff that you planned out. Instead of my disorganised way… where I started a brand new FLA for some reason to make the short :| Makes more sense to keep to the timing you planned in the first place! As for layering it’s pretty much the same, I don’t go heavy on them except for one for each character, of course, and various objects and falling water etc. |

Well, first I draw my work out in a black brush animatic. Nothing detailed, just a few key poses from one spot to the next and start fleshing out the camera angle. Then I draw all the backgrounds on one layer. If it has moving elements (i.e. clouds, wind, moving grass, rain) then I put that on a layer right above the background. I draw everything with the pencil tool and it changes from .25 to 1.25 depending on the object's distance from the mid-ground and foreground. And it’s on various layers ranging from 4 to as many as 20 depending on the scope of the scene. I also try to use all styles to my advantage. Most of my shorts combine fbf, tweens, movie clips, filters, semi-transparent color layers, shape tweens and a little actionscript thrown in too. (This is why my Sonic Switch cartoon and Trash and Clash are taking so long to make! XD). Untill I compact, delete and merge layers, my fla is actually a huge mess of excessive details, shading, layering, lighting, and timing. (And all that just to get it looking all seamless, haha ^^; ). But sometimes I do use the brush for more "painterly" animations, or just quickies. It gets on my nerves though, because coloring them fbf is a big-ass pain....especially when you cross-hatched something or draw overlapping hair follicles. |

Oh heck, that's what I really hate about using the Brush tool for actual drawing of frames. x___x Unlike the pencil, you can't rub over and put lines in without it looking a splodged mess here and there due to the varying thickness. I'm not master of the various 'Paint' options either :/ Pencil just seems easier and cleaner for this stuff- I take advantage of the fact I can rub out Paint lines without rubbing out the Line ;D! Wow, you do a great job of that too! It just flows brilliantly. I never even use the compact layers or merge.. don't even know how to use it and when. Yeah, many of the responses I give here consist of me telling me 'not-so-knowledgable' grasp of Flash haha! This is the first mention of actionscript in a short animation I've seen so far. I give that stuff a wide berth if I have to XD Sounds intriguing though! Thanks for responding.

Holy fucking shit, why does no one read the rules? I have an idea. We have newbs in a group that can only see one forum, in which is the rules, we put a question in the middle of the rules that they have to answer in a topic they have to post in that forum. If they answer the question, even if it's incorrect, we promote them, because we know they read the rules. Then we delete the topic after promoting him to avoid cheating. |

![]() Why don't you read the top of this thread, save an excess of £/$100,000 or something, and then ask about buying an animation studio? |

Pfft skill what skill? I just use the line tool to create everything. Oh and I do use photoshop and a few 3D programs now to get some cool effects but how I do that is my little secret. |
